Insert the lockset tailpieces through the latch bolt and screw the handles together by tightening the retaining screws. Once triggered the lever or lock trim can be removed from the door. Pull the exterior door handle strap outward and to the rear to release it from the exterior door handle reinforcement. Remove the door handle. Install a new door lock and door knob by inserting the latch through the hole for the new parts. Remove the screws from the face plate behind the handle on the exterior side of the door using a screwdriver or drill driver.

Avoid damage to the screws by using a hand screwdriver. Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the hole. If any screws are exposed during this process remove them to release the lock and remove it from the door.
